Cape Garonne Mine

Category : Mines
Department : Var

By 1850 mongers from the city of Marseilles made a demand of concession for the site of Cap Garonne to extract there sandstone pavements. The first extracted materials revealed brass and lead presence. Decision was then made to extract copper ore. This one was exploited during second half of XIXth century. The ore was sent by boat to Swansea (Wales harbor), to be processed there. Swansea was at this time a major site of copper processing in the United Kingdom. The weak copper ore content of Cap Garonne added to high costs of transport made that the mine exploitation was only profitable when copper rates were high. After several owners' changes, at the dawn of XXth century, the mine moves into production of copper sulphate (very used by viticulture then in full development in the region) without even so making profits. It closed in October, 1917 and was then occasionally reused for mushrooms culture.
From 1990, the three municipalities owners of the mine fitted out some galleries to make a museum in it. This one was inaugurated in 1994. A thematic route was also created above on the massif. But since the fire of August, 2005 which ravaged places, accesses are limited.
The visit of mine is a guided tour. Through various pictures and stage setting, it recounts the mine history, describes extraction methods and various copper applications. To notice the outstanding collection of minerals exposed at the end of the visit.
