The troglodyte village of Troo

Category : Troglodytes
Department : Loir-et-Cher

Trôo is a troglodyte city built on a freestone hill. situated at an altitude of 200 feet, it overlooks the valley of the river Loir. Trôo dwelling seems to trace its origins to the Antiquity. In the XIIth century, it was an English stronghold of County Maine, which was part of Plantagenet's domain. The current city is staged on three distinct levels. At the bottom part the old buildings, which some of them date back to medieval times, on the middle level the troglodytes and on the plateau, the high city with its collegiate church. The name of the city, would be a distortion of the French word "trou" (hole) pronounced by the English occupiers during the Plantagenet era. In addition to its troglodyte habitat and its museum, the city has many other attractions, such as "la Maladrerie", the "rue Haute" (High Street) spring or "le Puit qui Parle" (the Talking Well).
